Stand provides lifeline for cerebral palsy sufferer

The 24-year-old, who has cerebral palsy, was given an Easy Stand frame, allowing her to be mobile instead of confined to a wheelchair.

Rachel's mother Sue Gout said the standing frame would enable her daughter the opportunity to look people in the eye and be part of the action around her.

``When I first saw this standing frame I knew it would be right for Rachel. When she was little we used to put her in a standing frame but she just got too big,'' she said.

``This will improve her health and bone density and strength and give her the best quality of life.

``This has come from something that was a pipedream that we never thought would happen. When we heard there might be someone happy to help out it was like `oh wow'. This is absolutely wonderful.''

Ms Gout yesterday  praised the Anglesea Lions Club more for raising the money for the $8000 standing frame  and giving her daughter a lifeline.

Lions member Ken Mollison said they rang Scope in search of a project to donate money to and when hearing of Rachel's story knew it would be of great benefit to her.

``Seeing her use it today is tremendous. What we have done creates something that gives pleasure. She will now have the ability to feed herself,'' he said.

Kara Hanson, who works for Scope _ a not-for-profit disability service _ said the Easy Stand would free up the use of Rachel's hands enabling her to feed herself, play with toys and experience more of life.

``She will now get to look at a lot of different things and see where everyone else is and what they are doing,'' she said.
